Quote: "Deception has been observed in animals from elephants to arctic foxes. Ants take slaves. Chimpanzees may attack other bands of chimpanzees, unprovoked and with deadly intent. Groups of dwarf mongooses battle other groups for territory..."
Comment: In the chapter, "Animal as Saints and Heroes", a point is brought up sating the tendency people have when idolizing animals. Though it doesn't occur all the time, people often compare themselves to animals, thinking that an animal's intentions are utterly pure. Animals are notorious among researchers for acting out just as much as humans, such as committing rape, or blatant murder. Some examples include how Male lions kill the young of other male lions when entering a new pride, and how young hyenas, foxes, and owls have been witnessed by researchers to kill and eat their very own siblings.
Connection: Perhaps scientist choose to refuse to believe animals have emotions due to the many atrocious acts they commit. Maybe they believe that if animals were to commit actions such as stated above, they could not feel emotions such as humans due. But even if animals do have emotions, they would logically be vastly different from human emotions; therefore, if scientist are to neglect the idea of animals having emotions, they should at least be open to the fact that humans commit horrid actions just as frequently as animals. Also, they should take into consideration that animals and humans have evolved very differently, thus their thinking is not alike.
Questions: How often do animals do horrific things, and does it happen in every species?
